We are excited to offer our 6th Annual Texas Cyber Security Awareness Week (TexSAW) event. This year’s event will again target students who are interested in pursuing computer security. Students will be exposed to security concepts which will expand their knowledge of cyber security and broaden their career opportunities.

Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Meet students interested in cyber security from UT Dallas as well as other universities and colleges in Texas.
  • Attend workshops on Friday, November 4th, to develop fundamental hands-on skills in the cyber security topics of web security, cryptography and ethical hacking/exploitation.
  • Hear a guest presentation from a leading industry expert.
  • Put newly-learned skills to use in a cyber security competition on Saturday, November 5th.

Student hardware/software requirements:

1. For the CTF competition, the participants will be provided a virtual machine with tools loaded onto for use during the event. The system requirements for the virtual machine include: an x64 processor, 2GB RAM, and at least 5GB of available disk space. The programs required to install the virtual machine are VirtualBox and Vagrant. The participants would want to install VirtualBox and Vagrant on their laptops before coming to the event.

2. For web security workshop, a laptop with a web browser will be sufficient.

3. For pentesting workshop, a laptop with 6 GB RAM (preferred) and VMWare Workstation Player installed on the laptop (the latest version that can be freely downloaded from vmware web site).

4. For crypto workshop, John the Ripper tool to be installed on a laptop. Alternatively, participants can install Kali linux virtual machine on their laptops. Kali linux comes with John the Ripper by default.
